Exploring the Creative Mind of Feng Ji, the Creator of “Black Myth: Wukong”
“Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science and one of the creators of ‘Black Myth: Wukong’, was born in 1985. He graduated from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology with a major in Biomedical Engineering. In his younger years, he struggled with internet addiction and even gave up the opportunity to pursue further studies in order to play games.
After working at Tencent for several years, Feng Ji participated in the development of the ‘Dungeon & Fighter’ project and served as the chief planner and producer. In 2014, Feng Ji and several former colleagues left Tencent to co-found Game Science.
In 2020, Game Science released the first promotional video for ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ with the intention of recruiting talent. However, the video unexpectedly garnered widespread attention and praise from gamers in China. After four years of anticipation, ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ was finally released on August 20, 2024. Prior to this blog post, the game had already achieved sales exceeding 1.5 billion RMB and had over 2 million concurrent players on Steam, making it one of the most popular single-player games.
Despite not being an avid gamer myself, I was captivated by the promotional video released in 2020, as it showcased a level of cinematic quality rarely seen in games. This piqued my interest in the creative team behind the game.
How does Feng Ji approach his work? In a video interview with Xinhua News Agency released on August 19, 2024, Feng Ji shared some insights.
- Finding a Passion:
Feng Ji studied Biomedical Engineering in university but realized that it wasn’t his true calling. He mentioned that identifying one’s passion can be challenging and often involves recognizing activities that provide positive feedback. This resonated with me, as I reflected on my own interests and what brings me joy and fulfillment. - Overcoming Challenges:
Entering the gaming industry based on his gaming experience, Feng Ji initially felt disillusioned with the work being done. However, over time, he transitioned from being an idealistic critic to a pragmatic idealist. This transformation reminded me of the importance of perseverance and adaptability in pursuing one’s goals. - Embracing Imperfection:
Feng Ji emphasized that one can never be fully prepared for a venture, echoing the sentiment of ‘taking the first step and refining along the way.’ This resonated with my own experiences in striving for progress rather than perfection.
In conclusion, Feng Ji’s approach to creating ‘Black Myth: Wukong’ offers valuable lessons for anyone striving for excellence in their endeavors. Embracing one’s passions, navigating challenges with resilience, and accepting imperfection as part of the process are all integral to achieving success in any field.”
